A great article on Discovery.com called "Do Dogs Really Like to Surf?"

A few interesting points:

Dog surfing trainers say the dogs are actually enjoying themselves as they take to the board.

"You only attempt surfing with dogs that really love the beach and water," explained Rob Kuty, the official animal trainer at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego. "Dogs who fear or dislike either are almost impossible to train to surf, so you won’t find those dogs at these types of competitions." .....

Once canines are comfortable on the surfboards, Kuty and his helpers will take the dogs out into the water and hold the boards while letting the dogs feel the rhythm of the water. At this time, canines usually exhibit their particular surfing style. Some like to surf standing forward, while others take a side position or even orient themselves so they are backwards on the board ..

Welcome Surf Dogs

It has taken literally years to get this surf dog blog up and running. You wouldn't believe the issues!

I wrote this book about teaching your dog to surf years a couple of years ago, and it did very well. Then I went to a hotel in San Diego (the Loews Coronado) and suggested that we work together on an idea I had for a surf dog competition, the first ever in history! I came up with the title for the event, the description, and even wrote the very first press release.

They loved it, the competition did well, and now the Loews Coronada does the surf dog competition  every year (they call it the Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition. Now even other groups are getting in on the action (Dog Surf-a-Thon, for example, is a spinoff)  So it's great that these days it's a big deal, and I'm pretty proud of my original idea doing so well.

Well, we've got more great ideas where that one came from, so stay tuned, because you know... I wrote the book (literally)!

;-)
